The Economist had me out to their Ideas Economy “Human Potential” conference in New York last week. I gave a talk on Newspaper Blackout and Steal Like An Artist, but I also did some drawings on my iPad during the other talks, and posted them to Twitter as I drew. (Still getting used to drawing live on the iPad — not sure I love it, but I thought I’d experiment.) I’ve cleaned them up a little and collected them here.
HOW I GIVE PRESENTATIONS WITH THE IPAD
I took back my first iPad because it didn’t support full mirroring via a projector, but I’ve given several presentations using only my iPad 2, and so far, it’s always worked like a charm. I just double-check with the venue that they have a projector with a VGA input, and I’m good to go — often making adjustments up until the last minute. I love the simplicity of Keynote on iOS and I love being able to illustrate a point by drawing onscreen with my Boxwave stylus in Adobe Ideas. Simple. Easy.
Here’s how I do it. (Drawn with Adobe Ideas — see it bigger on Flickr.)

I ASKED GOD AND HE SAID YES (IPAD BLACKOUTS)
“SO MUCH WORK” AND MORE IPAD BLACKOUTS
Turns out the first batch wasn’t a fluke: I’ve continued to make blackouts on the iPad and share them on Twitter.
“SLEEP NAKED” AND OTHER IPAD BLACKOUTS
OUT OF THE WOODS
Last one done on the iPad for now: tomorrow we count down the one week left (!) until the book release with poems straight from the book!
This is day 7 out of 14 that I’m posting a poem a day until the book comes out on April 13th.
You can help the release by entering the contest to win a free limited-edition screen print or pre-ordering your copy today.
THE STORE WHERE SHE WORKS
Another little sketch done on the iPad. A gal over on the Facebook page mentioned she liked the Sharpie on newsprint look better…I do, too. I’m just having fun with my new toy, practicing up for doing them live on book tour. So bear with me: starting Tuesday, I’ll be posting all new analog poems from the book!
This is day 6 out of 14 that I’m posting a poem a day until the book comes out on April 13th.
You can help the release by entering the contest to win a free limited-edition screen print or pre-ordering your copy today.
STAY-AT-HOME FANTASY
My 2nd poem made on the iPad.
This is day 5 out of 14 that I’m posting a poem a day until the book comes out on April 13th.

HOW TO MAKE A NEWSPAPER BLACKOUT POEM ON THE IPAD
Note: this post has been updated since 2010.
People always ask me when I’m going to develop an iPad app for Newspaper Blackout. I’ve always told them that I don’t want to because I think there’s something magic about feeling the newsprint in your hands, smelling the marker fumes as you make your poem.
Even though I still prefer the old analog way, there are times (mostly on the bus or out on the porch or lying in bed) when I don’t have a newspaper and a marker in front of me, so I’ve been experimenting with making them on my iPad.
Here’s how I do it, if you want to play along…
