Saul Steinberg is one of my favorite cartoonists of all time. Tonight I found this 1949 first edition of his second book, THE ART OF LIVING, in a Half Price Books for $12. (See my other posts on Steinberg.)
Dig the line work:
The use of collage:
The counterfeit handwriting:
The music notation paper:
Terrific stuff. On cartoonist Mike Lynch’s blog, you can see some great scans of Steinberg’s first book, ALL IN A LINE.
Don’t you just love coming across ‘finds’ like this! Good for you! Thanks for letting us peak inside as well.
Lucky lucky you.
I met Steinberg once at a party in NYC. It was in the late sixties and I I was still in art school I was in awe of him and his work, but too young to be able to pull myself together to have a conversation with him.
brilliant score — congratulations.
stumbled across a saul steinberg exhibition at the jp morgan library a little while back and fell head over heels. he could say so much with a line.
That show was amazing. My wife and I saw it on our honeymoon.
Thanks, Austin, for the linky. And congrats on the Steinberg book. Whatta find!
hej, i’m looking for a drawing of saul steinberg from this book. i can’t find the book here in belgium, so maybe you could take a picture of it and send it to me?
it’s a drawing from a pension(there is a sign saying ‘no vacancy’). georges perec describes it in his book ‘espèces d’espace’. you can see through the house, see the different rooms and stuff in there. do you know which drawing i mean?
you would make me really happy if you could show me this drawing!
i hope you get this message!
greetings from belgium,
sofia.
see it bigger
Merci pour ces merveilles, Steinberg est sans doute le plus grand des cartoonists!!!
