Today a woman called and wanted the 1-800 number for Red Delicious Apples.
I had to calmly explain to her, with several patrons turning their heads to listen, that “red delicious” was a VARIETY of apple that farmers grow, not a BRAND.
I think this information blew her mind.

a Google search for “red delicious apples 1-800 number” will direct you to BoB’s Produce, 1-800-685-0315 within the first couple hits.
I’d love to be at the other end of that line. “You’ve reached THE Red Delicious Apple Source, how may I help you?”

Reminds me of when I was at the help desk a couple weeks ago. I helped a lady set up an e-mail address. When all was said and done, we walked through it again. How to get to mail.google.com, how to type in the name and password, how to start a new one, save it, send it, etc.
The next question, “Okay, so I always have to use a computer for this? Isn’t there like a number I can call?”
Every so often you get a peek at the strange physics of another person’s mind.

being a public librarian is a daily exercise in understanding just how truly lost and bewildered the average person out there really is
