Oh man, I like how you intersperse the oldies with the newer ones. I swear “Blue Moon” has got to be the most depressing songs ever. And “Runaway” is just so compelling to me–I love how it resists the urge to overexplain, we’re suspended in this kind of emotional anguish: not just of a broken heart and a break-up but, jesus, the mystery of “why she ran away” which speaks to so much dangerous potential. It really sets your imagination into spasms, which is so much of what guilt, jealousy, heart-break in a relationship is about–the uncontrolled imagination. “And I wonder where she will stay” gets me every time.
Del Shannon sure was an ugly guy though.

i love the element of mystery in great songs — most of these songs don’t necessarily TELL a story, they HINT at a story.
“give my love to rose” is one of my favorite examples: who the hell is this guy singing this song? what’s he gonna do with all this money? will he really give it to rose?
imagination is what it’s all about!
