Back in March, my friends Mike Rohde, Sunni Brown, Dave Gray and I presented a panel to a packed house at the SXSW Interactive conference here in Austin, Texas. Last week, they posted a podcast of the session without visuals – so I spent some time syncing our slides to the audio.
Watch it above, or see the whole thing here: Visual Note-Taking 101 from SXSW 2010.
Watch a short YouTube video of my faces exercise:
And learn more about visual note-taking:
- My notes on our 3-hour Vizthink webinar that got this whole thing started
- Visual Thinking for Writers – a talk I gave to our local Vizthink Austin group (see a few slides)
- My sketchbook and drawings from SXSW 2010
- Use the #viznotes tag to see what people posted on Twitter and Flickr
The coolest artifacts from the panel are the amazing Scout Books that Pinball Publishing had printed for us: read all about them.
I squirreled away a couple of them before we ran out — leave a comment below telling me why you want one okay those were making me feel too guilty that I only have four: how about a link to the coolest thing you’ve seen this week and I’ll pick four winners. Contest ends Monday, May 17th. (Be sure to include your e-mail — it won’t be published.)

I’d love one because I attended the SXSWi panel, but they ran out of Scout books before they got to my row in the back. Sadness. Albeit the Scout book, I still learned some kickass sketch tricks, they’re just in my moleskin instead. But I’d love/appreciate the memento!
Regardless, thanks for the fantastic SXSWi panel!
Dennis says
I’d love one, because a) they look awesome and b) this is the first time that the deadline for one of your contests is a week away and my slow RSS-reader doesn’t make me miss out. c) I just want one.
Anyway, thanks for syncing the audio, it’s really cool.

I need one because it brings together several things…
1. Another place for me to capture sketchnotes
2. A reference to Ed Emberley who I collect and have enjoyed since age 6, of course done by you
3. Mike Rohde’s Type Tutorial
4. A doodle from Dave Gray
5. SunniBrown’s advice
Lastly, my promise to put it 100% to use on sketchnoting.

Since discovering visual thinking and sketchnoting, i’ve been sharing it with peers in the office, and on client sites. Always get great looks when during a client meeting with Cxx execs bring out the original iPad – a moleskin with a apple logo sticker and gaffer tape to hold my signo.
I love the chance to explain this process to people, and the scout book would make this task even easier. Not to mention its got Mike Rohde’s Type Tutorial (typefaces when using a single pen is my biggest problem at the moment)

Pick me! Pick me! I need a place for my Flat Stanley doodles.

As a young designer (fresh out of Parsons The New School for Design), visual notetaking is my every day. Until I listened to and watched the video from SXSW, I didn’t realize the ineffectiveness of my own notes. Sure, I have all the pertinent information down, along with some wacky doodles, but nothing as effective or appealing as what you guys do. I’ve wanted to go to SXSW for years now. Anyways, I’m finishing up my thesis all this summer which has to do with drawing as a form of stress-relief. As I make my way through my thesis research, this moleskine would be incredibly helpful (and incredibly cool) to help me focus my thesis even more. The tutorials inside the covers are great and I’ll no doubt follow them whether I win a journal or not, but having them as quick-reference guides by such great people is just awesome.

Please, please, please…
(maybe you could ask the pinball publishing guys to make them available for purchase?)

I want one because I have *finally* finished my PhD after 6 long years and can now start taking notes on fun things again!

I would love to have one because I have always wanted to be able to fill my notes and journals with nice drawings, but, alas,I CAN’T DRAW! I think I could learn something from your teaching on visual note-taking.I really wish I would have been at SXSW 2010. Along with the music, this seminar would have been a highlight. I am an avid journal collector-user, and one of these one-of -a -kind jounrals would be great to have!!

I would really love one of these. Why you ask? Well, let me start off with the fact that my drawing ability is an untapped resource. I really feel I could change the world if I only could channel my inner Van Gogh, without the whole ear cutting thing and all. Imagine a world where my hand drawn icons and ideas cause world peace to finally come to fruition. Dogs and cats living in harmony. Tina Fey is the White House press secretary. This is the kind of world we all want to live in. And it is in your hands.

I don’t have that much of a reason. I love to write. I love to draw. It was just my 24th birthday and then my boyfriend of over a year broke my heart last week… On international star wars day. Who would break a heart on such an amazing holiday? Oh well. I figured this would be good… keep my mind off of everything. Heck, maybe even lift my spirits a bit more. Keep me occupied. Plus it’s from you, Austin, and you’re pretty fantastic so I’d be honored to have something from you.
Freckled says
I can’t draw. I’m wondering if I can really write.
I’m graduating with my degree in English after 10 years of going to school and I have three months over the summer to start writing short stories and my long awaited book before graduate school starts in the fall.
Cause you love my comments.
Cause I’m your biggest California fan.
Cause I have your postcard on my bulletin board, gathering the courage to write my first words.
Cause you want to see what happens.
Plus I’ve started to block out lines of text in novels by drawing boxes around them a la your method instead of highlighting.
Tammy Strobel says
Ohhhh this is the coolest thing ever! I’m planning on taking a drawing class this summer and this little book would be perfect.
Also, a friend sent me a video you did about visual thinking for writers last night. I loved it! I’m in the process of writing my second ebook and the video was extremely helpful. Thank you so much!

Because I’ve never been able to doodle, oppressed as I’ve been by the tyranny of the written word. Please liberate me!

the coolest thing I’ve seen all week?
Well this seems like an appropriately themed comment, but it’s really just a coincidence. The coolest thing I’ve seen this week is an opportunity. The Art House Coop’s new sketchbook project just opened for sign-ups.
http://arthousecoop.com/projects/sketchbookproject
I’ve taken part in one of their other projects (the print exchange) and it was awesome, I actually just signed up to do it again. However, I also secretly envied the people who took part in the last sketchbook project and tour. So I’m not letting this one pass me by! Even though I think my favorite part won’t even be participating, it will happen be next year when I get to go to one of the tour stops and see all the other books! A room full of other writer’s and artist’s notebooks to to look through, really? I get to do that? Awesome.

mmmm pretty notebooks!
this (http://www.booooooom.com/2010/05/10/artist-painter-richard-jackson/) is one a tha coolest things i’ve seen all week… hunter gets captured by the game, wall gets painted by the canvas…

Not at all on the same subject, but if you’re a total dork and like NES games and Mario in particular, this Flash game is pretty damned spectacular.

Coolest thing this week was this cute ten-page wordless comic I stumbled across http://laurabifano.blogspot.com/2010/02/comic.html
I’d love one of these books… I’m desperately trying to get back into the habit of drawing regularly after letting my skills slip for so long. Fantastic idea!

This may not be the coolest thing I’ve seen all week, but it sure is the funniest.

It didn’t show the website in the body so here’s the link again.
